Dr James Kustow is a London-based Consultant Psychiatrist. He runs a private clinic based at 127 Harley Street in Central London, and also works in the NHS one day a week.

He studied medicine in Nottingham and trained in psychiatry with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals) and at St Mary’s Hospital.

Dr Kustow is a general adult psychiatrist with experience working with the full range of mental health difficulties that are encountered in adulthood. He is also a psychotherapist and has an interest, and considerable experience using, body-focussed interventions when working with psychological trauma and its various and broad ranging manifestations.

One of his other main areas of specialist expertise is in Adult ADHD. He sits on the Executive Board of UKAAN (the main professional organisation for Adult ADHD in the UK) and he chairs the national training committee. He is a senior Consultant in one of the very few London-based NHS Adult ADHD services.  Dr Kustow is a recognised national and international speaker on Adult ADHD. He is also currently chairing a team of European experts in the 2017/8 update of the pharmacotherapy section of the European Consensus Statement on Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult ADHD.

Dr Kustow is somewhat of a pioneer in the UK in terms of personalised medicine. He has, for some time, recognised the obvious value in a more targeted and informed approach to medication choice. Pharmacogenetic testing gives the clear advantage of being able to navigate away from certain medications where an identified genetic variant may lead to an adverse reaction or a sub-optimal response. Through a recent alliance with Myogenes (and in turn, Genomind) he has found a seamless way to introduce pharmacogenetic testing into his private practice, and more broadly to his psychiatric colleagues.

Dr Kustow is on the Board of Trustees of the London-based Anthony Nolan charity and was the founder of the award winning ‘Marrow’ programme, a network of university groups across the country, which provides a third of the UK’s stem cell register.
